I was never aware of how special this bird is. Expecting a slightly bigger sea gull, I have seen my first Albatross on a boat tour in Kaikoura, New Zealand. Not only its size or its prettiness, but also its perfectly designed body, absolutely impressed me. Spending most of their life on the sea, you have to go onto a boat, to see the Albatross in it’s whole beauty.
Not the biggest, but just as impressive birds are Mollymawks, also known as Lesser Albatross, like the Chatham Albatross, the White-capped Albatross or the Buller’s Albatross.
These birds just look fantastic, no matter if they are in the air or on the water.
The Royal Albatross is – with a wingspan of about 3 metres – one of the largest flying birds in the world. At the Royal Albatross Centre on the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand – the world’s only mainland breeding colony – you can see chicks, juveniles and breeding parents. At this place the Northern Royal Albatross chicks get fed for a whole year, until they spend the entire next five years of their life on the water.
